Whether you’re heading away for a staycation over the weekend or simply just for an afternoon in the sun, you’re going to need a soundtrack to accompany the trip. We’ve compiled a few of the best new driving songs to blast through your car speakers, including everything from the ideal post swim, pre clubbing anthem, Wellington kraut-rock, one for the backseat drivers and something for excessive steering wheel tapping.

Action Bronson - Easy Rider

The psychedelic sounds of Action Bronson’s 'Easy Rider' are the perfect accompaniment for a blissed out drive in the scorching heat of the afternoon. It comes complete with motorcycle sound effects and lines like, “ride the Harley into the sunset.” The video was directed by Kiwi Tom Gould and features Bronson as an acid-tripping motorcycle rebel.

The Phoenix Foundation - Bob Lennon John Dylan

The kraut-rock inspired track from Wellington band The Phoenix Foundation will have you yearning for the accelerator from the get-go. Perhaps one to hold on to until you hit the open road. Driving gloves and shark eye sunglasses are a must.

Rodi Kirk - Underwater

From the NZ-born, Berlin-based producer's latest EP, Solms - which as a whole serves as the perfect travelling soundtrack. It doesn’t just stop at four wheels here, it's also a must for long haul boat, bus, motorcycle and train rides.

Parquet Courts - Stoned and Starving

The pepped-up vibes of Parquet Courts' 'Stoned an Starving' are a stark contrast to the drugged-and-hungry lyrical themes. One thing’s for sure, it’ll get you hankering for a slice of the open road and well executed lane changes.

Strange Babes - Holiday

LA-based, New Zealand band Strange Babes have created the quintessential summer driving song. Even cranking this beauty on a trip down to the shops will make you feel like you're a world away. Picture sand filled crevasses and burning legs on a leather car seat.

Lorde, Stromae, Pusha T, Q-Tip and Haim - Meltdown

Lorde curated the soundtrack for the latest Hunger Games soundtrack from her tour bus. She must have been in the need for speed with lines like, "Fifty feet all on the gas." One for the backseat drivers.

The War On Drugs - Red Eyes

The steady clockwork beat and uplifting instrumentation will make you feel like escaping from it all. Once the guitar solo comes in, excessive steering wheel tapping will commence.

Chvrches - We Sink

Somehow Chvrches 'We Sink' manages to put tears in your eyes and give you the urge to fist pump at the same time. The majority of the group’s debut album The Bones Of What You Believe is sufficient for driving and caters to all scenarios.

Fazerdaze - Reel

The authentic summery vibes and reverb-drenched vocals will take your mind to another place, while the consistent rhythm is the perfect match while you literally drive to another place.

Calvin Harris - Summer

One for the journey home and the ideal post swim, pre-club anthem. The music video even features a bunch of models as the pit crew for a drag race, and at one stage, Calvin Harris finds himself behind the wheel. It's meant to be folks.
