Overview

The Crown is the latest from Pack & Company and the first of it's Little Empire Brewery and Eating Houses. After only a few weeks in operation it is already proving a hit with city workers. It has its very own microbrewery tanks behind the bar on the ground floor where they have just started brewing their own beer, which will be available for purchase from mid June.

The Crown building was built in the 1860’s during the industrial era. The owners have done a great job with the fit out, keeping it modern yet rustic. Sunlight beams through the large windows during the day and fresh air flowing in during evenings.

The music selection is top notch with a very impressive selection of New Zealand music weaved throughout. It sets a very chilled and relaxed tone once you walk through the doors.

The menu is classic and hearty. Portions are generous and for those with smaller appetites you are able to share or have half sized main options. Here are a few recommendations for meal options. For starters try the Fisherman’s Tempura Basket: with oysters, local market fish, squid, mussels, lemon and soy aioli. Or, you can try the very popular range of sliders. A crown favourite for a main is the 12-hour amber ale braised beef cheek, black truffle potato mash and leek. If you still manage to have some room for dessert, you can't go past the apple and feijoa oat crumble with hokey pokey ice cream.

On the drinks menu, there are a range of New Zealand wine and beers complimented with an international selection. If you require something more fun, order off the cocktail list.

Tucked around the back is a kiwi themed functioning brewing area that’s also a bar. Upstairs is a newly renovated empire saloon inspired area with large curved booths in tan leather. There is a fully stocked bar, dance floor and DJ booth. A special touch of the room is the large bookshelf running down the middle of the room sectioning off an area great for meetings. Bookings are welcome for private functions. A roof top garden bar will also open later this year.

The Crown is just a short 2 minute walk to the central transport hub of trains, buses and taxis in case you may have had a little too much to drink and cannot drive yourself home.

A must visit for anyone who likes a chilled atmosphere.
