Askew One Smoke Signals

Overview

A few months back, Creative Mornings hosted Askew One for one of their breakfast talks. And it was worth waking up at sparrow's fart to get there.

Smoke Signals is Askew One's biggest solo exhibition to date. Even if you may not think too much about graffiti art (I admit, I was once skeptical about its place in galleries), I'd encourage you to get along and check it out. This guy oozes talent and his portfolio of street art is second to none.

Widely considered to be one of New Zealand's driving forces on the street art scene, Askew One is a pioneer of the movement. He is well versed in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, music and moving image; a skill set that sees him pushing boundaries and adopting a really experimental style. What's more is that he is self-taught, a reflection of genuine passion for an art form.

This exhibition combines a blend of bold illustrative line work influenced by comic books, typography and his cynical spin on patriotic slogans. His works deal with his identity in New Zealand and the Americanisation of some parts of our culture. He specifically looks at it through the perspective of someone who grew up through the 80s and 90s.

Smoke Signals is a free exhibition and is open weekdays from 10am - 6pm and weekends 10am - 4pm at the Australis Room in Britomart.
