Overview

Succulents are still in fashion. In fact, they now feature in plays. The Basement Theatre is Auckland's home of theatre that pushes the envelope, and it's about to become the temporary home of 273 cacti – and one young woman with a lot to say.

In her debut solo show Lucinda The Cactus Girl, Lizzie Morris tackles a condition that clouds the minds of many New Zealanders. Anxiety is something many of us have experienced – or may experience – at some point, and Morris drags it out into the spotlight on stage. Utilising her skills in puppetry and clowning, she throws comedy at a topic that can at times, be far from funny. Her quirky production is structured as a day in the life of 'Lucinda' – which could be more appropriately described as a day in the mind of her character. It is littered with comedy, song and of course cacti, many of which have been generously donated from various homes around Auckland.

With direction from Freya Boyle, Morris and her 273 spikey friends take over the Basement's stage from Tuesday October 18 to Saturday October 22. If you donated a cactus to this production, make sure you don't miss the chance to see your windowsill-pal become a star.
