Overview

In 1699 a French fellow called Jean Baptiste moved to a small settlement just out of New Orleans, Louisiana where he brought many French customs to life. One of the most notable was a February 28 celebration which evolved over 300 years to become what we know as Mardi Gras. Few experiences compare to seeing this unique and hedonistic cultural phenomenon at its source on the bustling streets of New Orleans.

The streets of Auckland don't go off quite the same but Britomart bars Racket, Rec and Orleans certainly give it a nudge. This year's Mardi Gras festivities will be led by a pie eating competition featuring professional gorger King of Cheat Meals and a grand prize of Orleans vouchers to the tune of $500. The night will then kick on with a range of drink specials, delicious Creole food and live appearances from local legends: The Voodoo Set, Hollywoo DJs, Imagine This and the Foreign Faders. Get your fingers on some sticky ribs, your palm around a sazerac and your feet on the dance floor this Mardi Gras at Orleans.
