“Hey babe, lets go somewhere nice for dinner tonight.”

“OMG yes!”

“How about that classy joint just off Dominion Road in Balmoral, I think its called umm McDonald’s.”

“Fuck you James.”

This conversation is no longer relevant. McDonald's is going classy. Well, trying to anyway.

After extensive research, McDonald’s has come to the realization that people want gourmet. As only the third country in the world to have this theory tested, McDonald's New Zealand is launching a ‘Create Your Taste’ learning lab this week at its Balmoral store in Auckland.  It is said to be a glimpse into the future of the fast food giants many, many stores across New Zealand.

At first, it sounds a little like a peculiar cross between Subway and Burger Fuel...

Create Your Taste provides customers the opportunity to create their own burger to suit their taste.  Using digital touch screen kiosks, customers can order one of three suggested gourmet burgers — a “Classic Cheeseburger”, “Homestyle” or “Chipotle”, or create their own burger using 20 ingredients. Customers can choose their bun (three choices - but best to veer away from the lettuce bun unless you enjoy watching half your food escape onto the table as you eat), cheese (five choices), sauces (10 choices), salad (five choices) and premium toppings such as bacon, egg, grilled pineapple, or guacamole. ‘

...But,  there will be table service, and burgers will be cooked fresh off zee grill and served on a chopping board, with chips in a hipster kind of wiry basket. Although the process significantly slows down the fast food joint's ETA in your mouth to something you'd expect from a normal, non-fast food restaurant, the combination is sure to look better on Instagram than a couple of half eaten cheese burgers sitting on greasy yellow wrapper.

The base cost of the burgers are from $10.90 but the final cost will depend on what ingredients are chosen.
