The marriage of barbecue and beer is an alluring thing; smoky, sauce-varnished brisket falling apart at the seams, ice cold lager tranquillising the obstacles of everyday life. In a new joint venture by pit-smokers Miss Moonshines and Moa Brewing Co. the two pleasures will come together for a day-long event.

Kicking off from 1.30pm on Saturday 7 May at Moonshines HQ in Ponsonby, the inaugural Meat the Neighbours event will see Moa co-founder Josh Scott demonstrate how to refine home brewing techniques with a portable brew kit, as well as give his two cents on the art of beer making. Low and slow barbecue enthusiasts are also invited to bring along their own meat to be put under the fork at a pit boss gathering.

As the action unfolds, six different Moa beers will be on tap for tasting and a selection of vendors at The Street Food Collective will serve up dishes matched to or incorporating the beer on offer.

Following the free daytime schedule, a four-course feast will be prepared by Miss Moonshines' chief pit smokers Cristian Jalaf and Ryan Clapham. For the $60 price tag, diners will indulge in a menu of stuffed jalapenos with banana, chilli brisket, cream cheese and bacon, pork three ways, beef short rib with beetroot, pea puree and watercress, and Orleans donuts with salted caramel and vanilla cream. Each course will have the option of being accompanied and matched with craft beers, one of which was pit-smoked with pohutukawa and brisket in Miss Moonshines' BBQ and brewed exclusively by Moa for the event.

Tickets for Meat the Neighbours feast can be booked by phoning Miss Moonshines on 09 360 4075.
