Los Angeles-based producer Henry Steinway aka RL Grime is best known for his ability to blend bass-heavy dance music and southern hip-hop, regularly being slated as a bastion of the trap genre. He first came to light with his breakthrough track 'Tell Me' with Aussie duo What So Not and a remix of Kanye West's 'Mercy', which swiftly clocked up more than 7 million streams on SoundCloud.

His sophomore EP High Beams saw its release through influential EDM label Fool's Gold Records, resulting in a number one spot on the iTunes chart and collaborations with a who's who of artists in the electronic genre. It is fair to say he is at the top of his game.

In between playing at Groovin' the Moo festival across the ditch and to support the release of his debut album VOID in May, Grime will play his first ever show in New Zealand. Thanks to Tiger Beer you have the chance to get up close and sweaty with the man himself.

Head to Fortune Avenue to go in the draw to win one of three double passes to his Auckland show on Wednesday, May 6 2015. Competition closes May 1 2015.

Trap-fiction

The RL Grime moniker tips its hat to R.L Stine, the author of teen-horror-fiction series Goosebumps. After connecting over Twitter, the duo collaborated on a Halloween mixtape, which features the famous author providing voiceovers and introducing the mix. Goosebumps illustrator Tim Jacobus also lent his talents for the mixtape cover.

Split Personalities

He started making music in high school as tribal-house producer Clockwork. After moving to New York and seeking an outlet to produce new music he wrote his first RL Grime track. In the beginning he attempted to keep the RL Grime pseudonym a secret and played with a t-shirt wrapped around his face. He still regularly releases music under the Clockwork title.

He's Doing It

He's a member of the Los Angeles electronic music collective WeDidIt alongside fellow Los Angeles-born producers Shlohmo, Groundislava, and D33J. In April 2012 he released his debut EP on the WeDidIt label.

Weird Noises

The track 'Julia' from his debut album samples a noise that's on the world's list of unexplained sounds. The sound, also called Julia, was recorded in 1999 and is most likely a large iceberg that had run aground off Antarctica. It was heard across an entire chain of underwater listening posts around the world and lasted for about 15 seconds.
