Overview

Zest Organic Foodstore and Café may well be Devonport's best-kept secret. Offering a wide variety of organic goods to purchase from fairtrade tealeaves to chemical-free hair dye, Zest is also a humble café, offering a mouth-watering cabinet selection of tasty treats that use as much organic and locally grown produce as possible.

We found ourselves immersed in a range of said delightful organic morsels. Notable mentions go out to the satay tofu encased in organic pastry, the 'sausage rolls' crafted out of pulverised nuts and seeds, and the Raw Energy salad with shredded beetroot, carrot and greens, topped with the best basil vinaigrette ever.

And then it was time for the sweet stuff. We dived straight into a slice of orange tea cake served with locally made marmalade, a dark cacao peanut slice, and the best raw coconut bliss balls I have ever tasted, overflowing with chocolate goodness and a delightfully creamy texture. There's also freshly churned frozen yoghurt made with organic berries on offer, which had me making a mental note to return on a boiling summer's day and take a stroll by the water with such a nutritious treat in hand.

Oh, and I tried my very first teechino. What is a teechino, you ask? Why, it's a herbal coffee that's free of caffeine and full of deliciousness – perfect for the likes of me who suffer from the coffee-shakes with just one sip of a single-shot mocha. With wonderfully attentive service and what seems like an infinite knowledge.
