The skirts were short, hippies were groovy, and if you didn’t love The Beatles, then you loved The Rolling Stones. Teens danced on television shows, and everyone wanted to be a star. Or at least that’s what movies about the '60s have told us.

One film in particular has shaped the views of those who weren’t alive at the time, one made in the 1980s yet set two decades prior. Hairspray has been restaged on Broadway and remade featuring Zac Efron, but there’s nothing like the original. John Waters’ cult classic made a star out of Ricki Lake, and also featured the one and only Divine, plus Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono.
