    Italo Dining and Disco Club

For the past five years, Maurice Terzini (Icebergs Dining Room and Bar) and Giovanni Paradiso (10 William Street) have won over Sydneysiders aplenty with a taste of all things Italian at their annual Italo Dining and Disco Club. Now, it’s Melbourne’s turn, as the legendary, disco-fuelled celebration takes over Melbourne Food and Wine Festival‘s House of Food & Wine hub on Friday, March 31. On the menu will be a modern twist on those classic Italian flavours so ingrained in

On the menu will be a modern twist on those classic Italian flavours so ingrained in suburban Aussie culture, so expect to revel in expert iterations of tiramisu, backyard pizza, lasagna, calamari fritti, and much more. In true Italian style, it wouldn’t be a party without some free-flowing drinks — here, in the form of Cynar, Rosso Antico, spritzes, and even some backyard-style drops from local winemaker Owen Latta. Rounding out the fun and sending you dancing through the evening, will be disco-heavy DJ sets from the likes of Andee Frost, András, Pjenné and Dreamcatcher.

The House of Food and Wine

This year, the heart of all the MFWF action can be found at The House of Food and Wine, a laneway haunt decked out with lounge areas, dining rooms, and even a gallery space. Across all ten days of the festival, this little spot will play host to a lively program of sit-down dinner feasts, rollicking parties, and tasting sessions. Meanwhile, as artist-in-residence, designer-illustrator of Good Food Crap Drawing, Anna Vu, will be plating up a feast for the eyeballs, showcasing her food drawing style, and each day adding a new work inspired by the festival dishes she’s eaten.

And of course, expect all kinds of culinary goodness from the on-site bar, which will open daily from midday until late. Here, chef Morgan McGlone (Belles Hot Chicken) will be dishing up a range of small plates that nod to some of the past festivals’ food legends, while sommelier Mark Protheroe (The Recreation) has curated an all-Victorian wine list, including a couple of Patrick Sullivan low-intervention wines, crafted especially for this year’s MFWF.

Fancy Hank's and Grown & Gathered Dinner

It just wouldn’t be a celebration of Melbourne food culture without a big ol’ BBQ feast and this year’s MFWF is set to play host to a very special, low-waste porcine project. For a while now, the sustainable food warriors at Grown & Gathered have been raising a pig on scraps from the Fancy Hank’s kitchen and grain by-product from their local brewery.

Fast forward to April 3, and this little pig is going the whole hog, as the Fancy Hank’s team prepares a feast using the entire animal, cooked over charcoal and open flame. That’ll be teamed with a hearty spread of sides, salads, and preserved goodies from Grown & Gathered’s own cookbook, natural wines from their farm, and even a brand new seasonal beer from a Melbourne brewery.

    Smorgasburb

Here in Melbourne, pub grub is something we hold pretty dear to our hearts, and it’s that love affair that’s set to be the star of the show at the inaugural Smorgasburb celebrations. Hosted by Sand Hill Road —  the same guys behind some of your all-time favourite pub feeds — this promises to be one tasty afternoon. They’ll be pulling together the likes of Bossam pork belly tacos from the Terminus Hotel, a sardine katsu brioche sandwich from the Prahran Hotel, kombu- cured cobia from the Garden State, and the Bridge Hotel’s toasties. It’s all being served up against that iconic backdrop of the Bridge Hotel’s interior laneway, and teamed with a hefty drinks list worthy of any great pub sesh. Pre-purchase your tickets and you’ll get tokens to use on food and drink on the day.
