Crows Nest Has a Genius New Tapas Train

Like a sushi train, but Mediterranean.

Sushi trains, move down the bench. Crows Nest newcomer MediTrainean is the newest instalment in the train-style eating fad, serving Mediterranean tapas along a moving dinner table. Following in the footsteps of Mascot's Mezza Train, MediTrainean is the second of its kind to exist in Australia outside the OG sushi version — and the locals are loving it.

Sitting at 55 Alexander Street, this family-owned restaurant has both train seating and regular seating, surrounded by your requisite Greek-style blue and white colour scheme. Sure, the name is a preeeetty daggy pun, but the travelling menu sounds damn tasty — think traditional mezze dips, mussels spiced with caramelised onion, lamb stuffed zucchini and Atlantic salmon fish cakes, all whizzing past you at (slow) speed.

Dessert will also be served via train, because dreams can come true. Pick up a roast quince with crème fraiche and halva and a classic honey-covered, cashew-filled baklava, or perhaps the chocolate pudding with seasonal berries and baked ricotta cheesecake. They're both yours for the taking.

If eating from a conveyor belt isn't your idea of fine dining (come on guys, fun), they've also got a made-to-order grill menu and regular old tables to boot. The regular sit-down menu includes garlic tiger prawns, lamb skewers, and porcini and provolone arancini, which we're especially keen to try.

The curated list of wine, champagne and beer gives a fancier twist to the the concept, though BYO is still an option. All dishes, including those put on the train, are made fresh, so you know it's high quality despite the speed with which it is delivered to you.

We're not quite sure how tapas trains became the newest trend, but these small plates do seem to lend handily to the concept. We're happy to go along for the ride.

Find MediTrainean at 55 Alexander St Crows Nest; Open for lunch Thursday and Friday from noon to 10pm and dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 6pm.
