Locals with a bent for getting hot and steamy in public are in luck, the country's first pop-up sauna is making its way to Auckland.

Fashioned out of an old shipping container and recycled lumber, the traditional Finnish sauna can accommodate up to 15 people who want to get their sweat on. The structure features an 18kw heater to kickstart the perspiration and two-tiered seating in front of a large window, which in its location on the tidal steps in Wynyard Quarter, will allow for sweeping views of the harbour.

To save you attempting a change and dash from the carpark, the sauna also features changing stalls and an outdoor shower. And with drinking water on hand, saunees need only bring suitable attire and a towel. The initiative was launched by Waterfront Sauna Project, an organisation "passionate about bringing the community together through fun and new experiences," particularly in the colder months.

After completing its cycle in Wellington, the NZ Pop-Up Sauna will be set up beside the Wynyard Crossing Bridge from August 5 - August 26. It will be open from 4 - 9pm weekdays and noon - 9pm on the weekends. For more information, visit www.nzpopupsauna.com.
