Bottle Caps That Can Be Reused as Building Blocks

The pure potential of some Clever Caps.

There’s a new interlocking toy brick product on the market, and, unlike Lego, it is all eco-friendly and recycled. Clever Caps start out in life as bottle caps, and, just like a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly (except without the bad smile), they are reincarnated as building blocks. Handy.

The idea came from Brazilian packaging company Clever Caps, where two environmentally aware masterminds, Henry Suzuki and Claudio Patricks Vollers, decided that the billions of plastic bottle tops that are dumped every year is too high. Clever Caps replaces your average bottle cap, whose existence becomes futile when the bottle is empty, with caps that have a dual purpose. Their first function is to seal your Coke. Their second is to become a collectable, furniture or a piece of art. The blocks interlock in the same way that Lego does. Their design means that their round shape doesn’t affect your ability to build straight edged structures, since corners are built to transform the circles into squares, with loops that add to the adhesion of the blocks.

You know they’re going to work, too. Since Clever Pack has been working the bottle-capping scene for a while now. Back in 2010 at the Pack Expo in the U.S they were named one of the ten most innovative packaging ventures thanks to their safety cap. The guys ran a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo that didn't manage to get off the ground, but they’re still making Clever Caps and trying to get enough momentum up to produce and distribute the caps worldwide. So if you haven’t yet done your good deed for the day, or if you are genuinely excited about being allowed to play with blocks as a grownup, go flick them a donation or share them on Facebook, and cross your fingers that the initiative becomes a reality.
