Got avid New Year's health resolutions? We know a spot. Ponsonby exercise studio Sala has been a go-to for those looking for space to stretch and strengthen since it first opened in 2018. Well, over the summer the space has undergone a mammoth renovation, doubling in size and undergoing a chic-as-heck new fit-out by designer Mijntje Lepoutre to become, in the studio's words, a "full wellness mecca". On the timetable: classes across three freshly renovated studios, including a brand-new reformer pilates studio, the Eclipse Room. With a whopping 16 reformer beds, this is now Auckland's largest reformer studio — meaning less chance of pesky waitlists, probably. The warm tones of the new Solar Room will house restorative classes — think yoga, meditation and all those calming activities your therapist has told you to try. This space features cork floors and a stunning custom light setup from award-winning designer Angus Muir — the artist you probably know as the brain behind the incredible Takapuna Light Show each winter. If you don't believe exercise is done right unless you're sweating (can't relate) you'll want to head to the Sunset Room. You'll be heating up with the barre and fitness classes inside — as well as the giant sun-inspired installation. In addition to three fitness studios, the new space boasts a community working area, a relaxing lounge and a kitchen stocked with Kōkako coffee, tea and cacao. This is available to everyone on a koha system with all proceeds going to a different charity each quarter. There will also be a 'healing room' for a little extra one-on-one pampering — offering treatments like massage therapy, energy work and even a spot of tarot — and a concept store heroing local, conscious brands. Basically, whether you're in a 'new year, new me' mindset, or you're just sick of the boring treadmills and overwhelming music at your regular gym, this is the spot to overhaul your mind, body and spirit this year. If you're a newbie, Lindsay recommends trying a variety of classes — of both movement and mindfulness varieties. "Our health and wellness is comprised of the intertwined relationship between our mind and body. It's why we value practices like sound healing, yin yoga and meditation as much as our more physically challenging practices like dynamic yoga or cardio. They are two sides of the same coin," she says. "Now more than ever, holistic health has never felt more vital. My vision for SALA has always been to offer a space to allow people to move, unwind and connect," says Lindsay. "Extending our creative community is a huge step for the business, and I am thrilled to offer so much more. As the need for connection expands, so too will SALA evolve to meet those needs." You can find Sala Level 1/46 Brown Street, Ponsonby, Auckland. Check out the full timetable here.
