Overview

The luxury oceanside retreat, Southern Ocean Lodge, was damaged during the Black Summer bushfire of 2019, leading to its closure. Fortunately in the aftermath it was lovingly restored and reopened in late 2023 and it's a must-stay for luxury lovers heading to beautiful Kangaroo Island located off the South Australia coast.

The hoteliers have made some thoughtful updates to the original retreat's layout. Case in point: now its guest suites point southeast so guests can enjoy spectacular uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean.

Each of the twenty-three guest suites has private decks from which to take in that view of the limestone cliffs and ocean. And during the cooler months, the suite interiors have captured the perfect environment to snuggle up on the lavish furnishings beside an EcoSmart fireplace or relax in the lush sink-in bathtub.

New to the hotel retreat is the ultra-premium Ocean Pavilion, which houses a single four-bedroom owner's residence and two separate two-bedroom suites — ideal for groups travelling together.

The guests-only Great Room terrace now features a wet-edge pool. Guests can also treat themselves to a day of luxury wellness at the on-site Southern Spa, which has three treatment rooms, a sauna, a gym and hot and cold plunge pools.

Southern Ocean Lodge retains all the luxe extras including dining, drinks at the open bar, five signature Kangaroo Island experiences and airport transfers.

One for the bucket list.
