Overview

The art of fire dancing can be traced as far back as the ancient Aztecs who would do a fire dance as a way to appease their fire god Xiuhtechuhtli. These days the dance lives on in Mexico as a way appease the tourists. In other corners of the world, such as Burning Man festival and Artweek Auckland, fire dancing has become a stalwart activity.

Glow Artweek Fire Dancing is a showcase of contemporary fire dancing by New Zealand's more established as well as up and coming artists. Included in the lineup is Dragon Poi, Lucent Entertainment, Precision Pyromancy and Auckland Fire Dancing. The fire artists will be accompanied by the music of Gaio Lollo Windhover Bardelle.

The free show based in Devonport is part of the greater Artweek initiative happening October 7 to 15 across the city, celebrating the rich visual art culture of our city, including Late Night Art, the K'Road Street Gallery Tour, a workshop on how to buy art and Jack Trolove's exhibition in Ponsonby.
