Overview

Set to place you on the edge of your seat is Auckland Theatre Company's first play of its 25th anniversary season.

Written by acclaimed playwright Lucas Hnath, Red Speedo positions the infamous sporting battle of ambition and drugs centre stage. Ray (Ryan Carter) is an Olympic swimmer seemingly destined to win after trumping both Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Just a month out from the Olympics, performance-enhancing drugs are discovered in the team locker room submerging Ray in the middle of a scandal with the potential to ruin everything.

Here, tensions escalate through perpetuating betrayals, confrontations and threats which eventuate in a dramatic, explosive climax. Driven by the taste of superstardom, Red Speedo explores the ever-present nature between ambition and competition and how corrosive they can be.
