A Minimalist Chicken Shop Joins the Lineup at Mercury Plaza

A new lunchtime opening with two things on the menu.

The Malaysian joint that shifted some of Auckland's best laksa (Penang Delights, was it?) has left its outpost in Mercury Plaza, making way for a new minimalist fried chicken shop that is open for less than three hours a day and offers just two menu items.

Head directly down the stairs at the food court affectionately known as 'Mercs' and you'll now find Electric Chicken. The stall is the work of Matthew Fitzgerald, owner/operator of K'Road's Madame George.

Fitzgerald is keeping things simple at the new opening with only a fried chicken burger and fries up for grabs. The Bah Gawk burger, $9 for a single fillet or $14 for a double, is the main event. It comes with a crispy on the outside, tender on the inside free-range fillet with a bun from Italian bakery, Il Forno. Also joining the party is crisp lettuce, gherkins and 'Electric Sauce'. Then there's the Hen Pecked fries that arrive doused with a comforting, light brown gravy.

While an underground train platform is scheduled to takeover Mercs in the next few years, the pop-up won't stick around forever. It's now open between 12pm-2.30pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Though you'll need to be in quick — the chicken is flying out the door.
