Overview

Run by Olympic boxing coach Cam Todd and Olympic boxer Alexis Pritchard, the Eden Terrace-based Wreck Room's ethos is to build strength and endurance through boxing and complimentary functional conditioning group fitness training sessions.

Boxing classes cater for the absolute beginner all the way to the advanced boxer interested in sparring, while functional fitness classes incorporate a mix of strength-building and endurance-building workouts.

Boxing classes involve a rotation of endurance-building exercises and work on the bags, drills and shadow boxing. There are four types of boxing classes on offer: Boxing Intro (a foundational class for those new to boxing taught by Cam Todd), boxing (a 45-minute non-contact class suitable for all levels), Boxing 30 (a condensed 30-minute version of a regular boxing class with minimal rest periods), Purist I (a technique-focused class for those looking to hone in their boxing skills) and Purist II (a member-only full contact sparring class).

Props in the functional fitness classes include giant tyres and weighted medicine balls - making the classes feel quite akin to Crossfit, but without the same health and safety concerns since weights aren't ridiculously heavy and class sizes are generally quite small so the instructor can keep an eye on you. A Crossfit-lite, if you will. There are also classes that cater specifically to children and to those with Parkinson's as well as one-on-one training options available.

A walk-in class costs $22.50 while a ten trip concession is $180. There are also weekly membership options available - costing $35 per week (with no joining fee) for a flexible 'no term' membership to $29.50 per week for a minimum six month membership to $27.50 per week for a minimum twelve month membership. Students can sign up for a $20 per week minimum six month membership. All weekly membership options include unlimited boxing and fitness classes, while longer term memberships include free one-on-one classes. For those looking to for a more personalised training experience, the $220 'Fight like a Girl' month-long package with Alexis Pritchard and 'Learn to Box' month-long package with Cam Todd are good value as they include unlimited classes for a month as well as three one-on-one sessions.

All in all it's a really decent gym well suited to those who like boxing, being mentally stimulated while they train and doing challenging and fun functional training instead of using finnicky machinery.
