Overview

Depending on who you're talking to, Bluff oysters are the best oysters in the world. Hailing from the tiny town of Bluff — on the southern coast of the South Island — true Bluff oysters come from the icy cold waters of the Foveaux Strait. You'll struggle to find these gourmet delights anywhere but New Zealand and why not go straight to the source. They're larger than normal oysters, creamy and sweet.

When in season, you can nab fresh oysters at the Four Square Supermarket in Gore Street and at Fowlers Oysters which is on the left as you approach Bluff. If you're really serious head to the annual Bluff Oyster Festival in May. Self-described as "unsophisticated and proud of it", expect nothing fancy — just oysters, sav blanc and a lot of beer. Actually, that sounds pretty good to us.
