Overview

Chowhouse, formerly the James Street Bistro has undergone a major makeover to transform into an Asian fusion restaurant and café with a fresh look and an even fresher menu.

Where the Bistro’s outside eating area once stood is now a sleek courtyard with wooden frame walls featuring dozens of small plants in terracotta pots. From the outside, this gives the restaurant an immediately noticeable lift that is continued when you set foot inside.

The updated space takes its menu inspiration from Asian street food and is based on fresh, tasty produce. A breakfast menu is in place until midday, followed by lunch and dinner. Standouts on the breakfast menu (which features nasi goreng as well as the more mainstream bacon and egg options) are the open omelette with duck and potato and chilli-soy sauce, and roast pumpkin with poached eggs and haloumi. For the sugar loving diners there is a dessert cabinet on display inside featuring a mouth-watering range of cakes and treats.

At the bar inside you’ll find a great list of innovative cocktails as well as the usual range of drinks. If you’re planning on starting your night with dinner at Chowhouse, remember that opening hours are slightly later on Fridays and Saturdays (around 10:30pm) depending on how busy the night is.

Inside is air conditioned, and the courtyard eating area has plenty of ceiling fans to keep diners cool through the summer months. The staff members are polite and happy to accommodate any requests regarding your meal or the heat of your coffee, which is always a big plus at any kind of restaurant.

Located next to the Palace Centro cinemas and in the centre of the shopping district of James Street, Chowhouse has something to offer at any time of day.
