The Golden Pig Food and Wine School

We've found Brisbane's best smashed avo on toast. Think pain au levain, a sandwich press and butter, lots of it.

Take an award-winning building designer's eye and mix it with the culinary talents of a former head chef/personal chef to the stars and what do you get? The magical melting pot of creativity and sensory delight that is The Golden Pig.

A food and wine/cooking school by definition, The Golden Pig is run by Mark and Katrina Ryan - a passionate husband and wife duo – who share their love of cooking and making pure, delicious food with the people of Brisbane through informative and educational classes. Thankfully, they also decided to cater to the increasingly hungry corporates of Ross Street and opened their canteen cafe serving up creamy coffees and a suite of signature delicacies through the week.

The uniquely enchanted space is constantly filled with not only the waft of freshly baked pastries or rich curries on the boil, but with that air of sleek Scandinavian design - with hanging planter boxes, creeper vines and lusciously green ferns. When it comes to the food through you can expect real, wholesome meals with that slightly indulgent twist you'd expect from a top tier chef. For breakfast there is no going past the ultimate in avo on toast - smashed avocado, tangy labneh and pistachio dukkah on perfectly buttery, crisp toasted pain au levain – otherwise the house toasted muesli with greek yoghurt, poached pears and rhubarb is equally satisfying.

For lunch you can opt for one of the fresh and interesting salads – think tea smoked salmon with glass noodles and sesame dressing, or if you're up for it their fondly nicknamed "Duck Toastie" (Chinese roast duck, chilli jam, provolone cheese, parsley and coriander sandwiched by crunchy levain pane) is absolutely drool worthy. You'll never look at ham and cheese the same again.

So next time you're faced with more Weetabix at your desk or that dreaded soggy sandwich you packed lunch, pay a visit to the guys at 'The Pig' who will have your eyeballs rolling over something as simple as a piece of toast. Seriously. It's that good.
