Home to a 150-year-old heritage listed coral tree, Trunk is truly excitable; it's a venue that fills itself in every crevice of you for your visit and beyond. It's the total and complete package without a misstep. From the decor to the drinks, to the service, the leafy courtyard and of course the food, it is a space where the smallest of details will make your experience.

The courtyard, one of the largest you'll find within the CBD, is a marker of Trunk's uniqueness. A versatile space that is suitable for a special occasion or simply a few casual drinks, it's a glorious venue to while away a sunny afternoon or a Friday night with an expansive local and international list of beer, wines and cocktails in hand. Inside, the former 19th century synagogue has been transformed into a generous space of luxe and detail. High ceilings are complemented by steel beaming, marble surfaces and seductive dark wood finishes.

Trunk showcases the best of modern Italian food with a menu that emphasises an individual twist. Antipasti is carefully considered and could be a selection of charcuterie of the day ($16), or the grilled haloumi, tomato, olive and mint salad ($13). Likewise, the Flinders lamb rump (with spiced lamb dolmathes, aubergine and charred pepper salad; $34) is articulately layered. It is clear that bold flavours run the game at Trunk.

If you still aren't convinced, the Turkish delight trifle (with pistachio ice cream, ginger cake, custard and Persian fairy floss; $13.5) is a decadent conclusion. It'll also satisfy any of your sugar cravings for weeks. For something more simple, Trunk's pizzas run like a homage to authentic Italian fare ($12-22). Hitting the sides just right, they're comparable to some of the city's best.

Service is prompt and friendly with a touch of cheek, which complements the seemingly 'proper' appearance of the bar and restaurant. With such variety in the expansive space it is refreshing to experience staff that are genuine in their approach. The sheen is no less reduced and the experience all the more memorable.

Trunk is an original package in the heart of the city. With an atmosphere that is unmatched, the space truly ticks every box. It's a must for every Melburnian.
