It's hard to believe we're nearing the end of the year already, but the creative arts rest for nobody as we welcome another top selection of contemporary art exhibitions to Melbourne this November.
Everything in this city seems a little bit brighter at this time of year, and headline art exhibitions are no different with the National Gallery of Victoria hosting Del Kathryn Barton's eclectic collage and video works. Meanwhile, the annual Linden Postcard Show presents the best 8x10 inch works by casual and experts alike and the Contemporary for Contemporary Photography showcases cutting-edge photomedia. There's also a behind-the-scenes take on photoshoots, and the work of eight 'fictional' artists to consider in challenging work at Blindside. Sounds good, right? Read on for all the details.

Hosted for the 25th time in 2017, the Centre for Contemporary Photography’s Salon 2017 exhibition celebrates outstanding achievements in photomedia from across Australia. CCP Salon 2017 is a win for both photographers and lovers of the medium as 28 industry leaders have got behind the event to offer up $20,000 worth of prizes across the 35 categories. And you can have a say in the one categories winner as the public selects their favourite image for the Marion Boyce Costume Design People’s Choice Award. For the past 31 years, the Centre for Contemporary Photography has been one of Australia’s most important spaces for boundary pushing photography. Actively exploring the art form as new technologies, trends and shifting creative landscapes influence photography, CCP Salon 2017 is one of the best ways to keep up with the latest in photographic art. CCP Salon 2017 runs opens on Thursday November 23 and runs until Saturday December 16.

Daniel von Sturmer’s latest Electric Light exhibition is a dynamic presentation of luminance, colour, shape and space. Taking a behind-the-scenes perspective on photographic production, Electric Light utilises lighting setups, backdrops, stands and other equipment to create an extensive room-sized work. Illuminated by a range of shifting lights, the work considers photomedia’s role in reflecting what is ‘real’ and how truth can be constructed. Electric Light is hosted by Ten Cubed, a private art collection that’s open to the public. An evolving art project in itself, Ten Cubed has handpicked 10 diverse artists to collect extensively from over a period of 10 years – demonstrating their creative growth within one space. Sometimes artists appear to be larger than life, but in this case they actually are. For almost 20 years, Melbourne-based artist Sandra Bridie has been creating ‘fictional artists’ – a thought-provoking experiment considering the journey of artists, as well as posing a series of “what if?” questions on Bridie’s own career. Eight Fictions presents eight make-believe artists across mediums of photography, performance, sculpture, conceptual art, crafting, curatorship and text works; with each artist said to be born into a different Melbourne art-world eras and at various stages of their career. Rather than tricking the audience into thinking these artists are real, Bridie makes it clear that she’s the creator behind each artist’s work. This allows for the audience to discuss the work with a unique context and consider the lives of the artists at their varied levels of success and hardship. Sandra Bridie (b 19–): eight fictions is on display at Blindside Gallery from Wednesday November 15 until Saturday December 2.

There’s so much more to postcards than the often drab ones you find in the local post office. The annual Linden Postcard Show is the place where you’ll find the best of the best. Presented by Linden New Art and celebrating its 27th year, there’s about a thousand submissions for you to check out, with the Linden Postcard Show being the quintessential place to see the best examples from across both the amateur and professional arts community. Every humble postcard presented is on sale, while an esteemed jury of art curators and directors will select a winner to take home the $5000 cash prize. Meanwhile you can get involved by voting in the People’s Choice Award with the victor receiving $1000 for their 8×10 inch work. The Linden Postcard Show 2017–18 is on now and runs until Friday January 12.

Two-time Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton has long been wowing audiences with her kaleidoscopic collages, sculpture and film, amassing an impressive oeuvre of works that’s positioned her as one of Australia’s most admired artists. For her latest major solo exhibition at NGV Australia, the Sydney-based artist continues her interrogation of both humanistic and animals forms, using gaudy colours and patterns to draw the viewer into her works. The Highway is a Disco is Barton’s largest solo exhibition to date, offering up many of her most famous works, while also presenting new works from which the exhibition draws its name. It will be on display from Friday, November 17 until Monday, March 12.
