While many of Melbourne's food trucks are inventing the next big thing, TOASTA have taken a classic, upped the ante and, boy, have they delivered.
We've all experienced the hearty crunch that emanates from two pieces of golden bread encasing cheesy goodness, and this very sensory experience will make you wonder why you hadn't thought of making the ultimate 'can’t be bothered' food into a business yourself. Bec Feingold and Tim Boston have done just that — and it's everything we’d hoped for.
These guys are saving the masses one toasted sandwich at a time and there's not one square piece of white bread or reconstituted cheese in sight. Bec and Tim are all about encasing the best ingredients between two slices of Zeally Bay organic sourdough (or gluten-free, if you so choose) and melding it into one toasted, gooey mass that would convert even the most wary of cardiologists.
With an ever-changing menu, you can be sure you won't be getting two slices of Tip Top with a chunk Bega. The offering consists of candidates like Sammie (cheddar, swiss, mozzarella, parmesan, spring greens and dill), Charlie (swiss, shredded chicken, basil and walnut pesto, bacon and roast capsicum) and the piece de resistance, Barry (cheddar, slow-roasted brisket, pickle and smokey BBQ sauce). They do offer a plain cheese option for the purists, but when brisket abounds, is there really a choice?
You'll find the TOASTA crew firing up their presses between Yarraville Gardens, the city or South Melbourne, but keep an eye on their Facebook as they're a nomadic bunch. With some of the cutest branding we've seen on the streets, the truck is pretty hard to miss — but we're pretty sure your nose will lead you in the right direction.
