Overview

If you find yourself to be quite the culture vulture, then make track to Australia's oldest exhibiting Aboriginal fine art gallery, Cooee Art Gallery. The Gallery has two spaces in Sydney's eastern suburbs, with the OG located in Paddington and the second outpost in Bondi. Established back in the early 80s by local art dealer, author and art commentator Adrian Newstead, Cooee hosts regular exhibitions, including solo shows by celebrated living artists and thematically curated ones. Since opening, the Gallery has been responsible for more than 400 Indigenous art exhibitions both in Australia and overseas. Head on down to either gallery space and you'll find everything from contemporary paintings, sculpture and limited-edition prints to bark paintings, 19th and 20th century artefacts and early desert boards — all by Indigenous artists.
