Interview /// We Talk to Arrested Development Ahead of Sydney Festival 2011
Not the sitcom.
There was a brief period where Grammy award-winning '90s band Arrested Development was a tad overshadowed by a certain US sitcom of the same name. Since its departure the original rap group, responsible for hits such as 'Mr Wendal', 'Tennessee' and 'Everyday People', decided it was time to take back the reins and reinstate their ownership of a titular that has nothing to do with a lanky white guy called Michael Cera.
Jasmine Phull shares 10 minutes and a few questions with Arrested Development co-founder, Speech, ahead of the band's Sydney Festival 2011 appearance.
Jasmine: If things had been different I...
Speech: ...would have waited longer to release our second album.
J: One thing that scares you?
S: Smoking weed. I'd think I'd like to but I've never done it so it scares me.
J: What's something that you didn't used to have?
S: I didn't used to have money.
J: Favourite thing to collect?
S: Music!
J: One thing your mother taught you?
S: To say 'I love you' a lot.
J: What does your work teach you?
S: People are the same everywhere and that music is extremely powerful.
J: Favourite place to eat in the world?
S: I love to eat, it's so awesome for me. Love this joint called Houston's in Houston, TX.
J: What type of car do you have?
S: A Porsche and a SUV. I drive the porsche the least. It's the dessert car.
J: Your love after music?
S: Food. I'm not even sure if it's after music...
J: One way to escape without leaving the country?
S: Eat!
J: Most expensive thing you ever bid on on ebay?
S: I don't do eBay.
J: What do you think was your first big break?
S: Meeting Jermaine Dupri's dad in 1989. He's the reason we were able to get a record deal; because of his connections.
J: One thing you'd tell the 'you' first starting out?
S: I'd tell the 'me' before to enjoy the ride more!
