Five Things to Do During Aussie Wine Month If You're In New South Wales

in partnership with

Narrow down your options during Australia's biggest annual celebration of wine.

Now in its sixth year, Aussie Wine Month returns in May to showcase the diversity of  the Australian wine scene and celebrate the world class producers that our 65 wine regions have to offer. Sydney and regional New South Wales will come alive with events — vineyards and cellar doors are opening their doors to guests, and regional chefs are making their way into the city so everyone can enjoy good food and even better wine. In partnership with Wine Australia, we're helping you narrow down your options — here are five of the best things to see.

Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival 2017

Hidden just a few hours drive from Sydney, the Hunter Valley is New South Wale’s biggest wine dispensary. And there’s no better time to experience it than during the Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival over May and June. The whole region puts on a plethora of epicurean delights including gourmet dinners, vineyard tours, winemaking masterclasses, cooking classes and many, many excellent parties. Don’t be shy of taking a long weekend to explore it (incidentally, there’s plenty of accommodation options for all budgets even if you’re thrifting).

    The Original 100-Metre Meal

Now, The Original 100-Metre Meal isn’t what it sounds like — a 100-metre-long sandwich. It’s actually way better. The concept is simple. When you sit down to eat a beautiful meal, overlooking the Margan Wines estate, you can gaze out over the land and know everything on your plate was grown and raised within 100 metres of you. Margan produces lamb, garden vegetables, orchard fruits, free range eggs, fresh unfiltered honey and olives, as well as the paired wines you’ll drink during the meal. This two-course meal (happening every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 5 to June 30) gives a new meaning to the phrase ‘paddock to plate’.

    Grapest 5K Run

Running may seem, at first, like the very last thing you’d want to pair with good wine but hear us out — this 5K might just put the fun into fun run. So yes, you’ll have to run (or walk or sprint or crawl) for either five or ten kilometres. But you’ll be running through the beautiful vineyards of the Hunter Valley. And you’ll be spurred on by the knowledge that you get wine at the end of the race (wine: nature’s best motivational tool). When you wrap the race, you’ll wander, red-faced but happy, through another full kilometre packed with wine-tasting stations, knowing well that you deserve it all. Oh, and there’s an after party, of course.

    Pressing of the Cabernet

This event embodies the hands-on approach to winemaking. Although the Pressing of the Cabernet might sound like the title of a grim medieval painting, it’s actually a pretty cool (and free) event. The Tractorless Vineyard utilises some old-fashioned winemaking techniques, like leaving the skin and seeds on for longer to produce complex and rich wines. The pressing of grapes is one of their other fun techniques, which you can get involved in, and taste the fruits of your labour (literally) along with two other vintages when you’re done helping out. Make sure you wear clothes that can get a little (or a lot) dirty.

    Anderson Winemakers Dinner in Canberra

Wine-lovers of Canberra, rejoice! For one night, the best of New South Wales wine is coming to you. Howard and Christobelle Anderson, the namesakes of Anderson Winery, are coming to Canberra to host an indulgent four-course meal with seven paired Anderson wines. You’ll be dining alongside the winemakers themselves in an intimate dinner event. They’ve chosen the Boathouse by the Lake as a venue and we can see why — the cosy atmosphere and gorgeous lakeside view pairs well with good food, great wine and even better company.
