Four Sydney Pubs to Hit Before, During or After the Game

Sink a pint or two at these sports-friendly venues and cheer on your favourite team.

Got a ticket to the game? What you need now is a trusty pub for a pre- or post-game bevvie, or two. No ticket? What you need is a pub with a big screen — chances are, you'll have a better view than half the people in the stadium.

The trick is finding the right spot. For a venue to be game friendly, several elements need to be on point: well-positioned screens, a decent sound system, a friendly — albeit feverishly competitive — atmosphere, and quality food and beer. After all, watching a match can feel as taxing as playing one, so fuelling up and cooling down correctly is essential.

We've joined forces with Heineken to round up four pubs that won't let you down. They're scattered across the eastern suburbs, the inner west and the lower north shore. So, wherever you are, both the game and a refreshing Heineken will be within reach.

Watch the game in a super chill setting at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi. This rather roomy institution has oodles of space — and entertainment — for everyone. If you’re there for sport, you’ll be spoilt for choice: the Beach Road broadcasts pretty much everything, from NRL and Super Rugby to AFL and cricket. Take your pick from the busy main bar, the sun-dappled beer garden or the outdoor terrace to enjoy a delicious no-frills feed. The menu focuses on the classics: burgers, pizzas, and parmis — exactly what you want to eat while watching sport.

Is your dog all sad-eyed at the prospect of missing out on a game? Head to the dog-friendly Vic on the Park, and your four-legged mate won’t miss a minute. It’s in the cheery, spacious front bar that you’ll find multiple screens, showing the match of the moment. Meanwhile, if you’re making tracks to Henson Park for some real-life action, it’s only 1.4-kilometres away. On home game days, there’s every chance the Newtown Jets will be joining you at the Vic afterwards, too. A good selection of burgers, steaks and veggie plates are on offer; plus, all manner of beers on tap — including Heineken.

The sport obsessed have been gathering at the Bellevue for more than 130 years — with live sport broadcast weekly. The best spot to catch a match is the public bar, where there are screens galore. The Bellevue is an official supporter of the Waratahs, so, if you have a ticket to a home game or a Waratahs membership card, you’ll score ten-percent off food and drinks. With Moore Park’s Allianz Stadium just 1.5-kilometres away, this is a mighty convenient spot for a pre-match feast or post-match drinks — be they celebratory or consolatory.

Keen to spend the game in some sports-loving company? Pull up a bar stool at The London Hotel — if they’re not all already taken. Despite having scored a snazzy reno in recent years, this pub hasn’t lost its down-to-earth character. In other words, you won’t be the only fan shamelessly yelling at the big screen in between beers. The London broadcasts all Super Rugby, Wallabies and NRL matches live, too. On the menu is an array of hearty feeds — from share plates loaded with salmon and crab cakes to peking duck pizza.
