PhotonFlux is Wellington's first and only "post-apocalyptic space station", offering a comfortable stop for the thirsty traveller. Once docked, the visual vortex of astounding sci-fi and pop culture decor will lift any geek off the ground. Unfortunately, this effect may be so dizzying that it might take a few seconds to hear the friendly bar staff. Although the staff seem to be used to seeing this, their enthusiasm still matches your gawking as you are shown through to the rest of the spacey place.
Not only does the decor create great atmosphere, it is also the sense of community and fun about this place. The spacious seating area is accompanied with board games, books and pinball, keeping you entertained for hours. In addition, they boast a variety of creative events to keep up with on their calendar. Upstairs, there is even a gallery, named the The Room of Requirements which is open to artists who are keen to contribute.
The owners Anton and Nina, not only provide an amazing hangout spot, they also make sure the food and drink is up to par of the Wellingtonian palate. There is a good standard selection craft beers on tap including Garage Project and Panhead. If that's not your scene there is a generous selection of organic wines and non-alcoholic beverages too. However, the real treat lies within the themed cocktail menus. In light of Summer Star Trek season, there are five delicious picks. The highlight was the Klingon blood wine, a sweet mix of Barlovska vanilla and blackberry liquor, vodka and ginger. This is the perfect summer drink that trekkies will love.
Beyond the beverages are tasty bites provided by The Beat Kitchen that are perfect for sharing. Although smaller sharing portions, they are intergalactic with flavour and friendly for any stomach. The Fluxbuns are a top pick, where you can mix and match a plate of three sliders. Among the flavours was an outstanding chickpea and cashew patty with an Szechuan pepper aioli. Pair these Fluxbuns with the loaded polenta fries and you'll just want one more byte.
PhotonFlux is just that little bit of space this city needed.
