Overview

You know an artist is kind of a big deal when all of the artworks have sold before the exhibition has even opened. Named as 1 of 100 international painters to keep your eye on, award-winning New Zealand artist Andre Hemer has shown all over the world and when his exhibition opens at Wellington's Bartley & Co Art there will be a red dot next to each of his paintings: sold.

Like Petra Cortright whose works are currently on show at City Gallery Wellington, Hemer's work plays with the 2D flatness of the digital and the 3D depth of the handmade. He grabs attention with titles referencing popular contemporary vernacular: a 2011 exhibition was titled Swag, Smushing, and Nicki Minaj and his new Wellington show is called Small Paintings IRL. These playful references brush off art world elitism and reveal an artist who's connected to and working within our contemporary world. Feel the FOMO and grab your chance to see Andre Hemer's paintings IRL.
