Overview

As of January 1, 2014, the English language consists of 1,025,109 words (roughly). The average native English-speaking adult knows about 20,000 to 35,000 words, with their vocabulary size generally plateauing at middle age. Foreigners generally know about 4,500 English words, and around 10,000 from living abroad in an English-speaking country.
