Sunset Food and Wine
Expect coastal views, fine wine and a menu boasting the best local produce at this modern fine diner.
If you're looking for a fine feast on your travels to Kangaroo Island, head to dinner at Sunset Food and Wine. The modern bistro looks out over American Beach and is owned by Jack Ingram, former executive chef of Southern Ocean Lodge, a Kangaroo Island favourite that was sadly destroyed in the bushfires. The menu is stacked with fresh local seafood and produce, showcasing some of the best the region has to offer such as rock lobster, kingfish sashimi and Kangaroo Island honeycomb.
The a la carte menu boasts the likes of buttermilk-fried monkfish with kohlrabi, carrot and apple slaw ($23), chicken liver parfait with brioche ($18) and house-smoked salmon ($22) for entrees. Then, there's hand-rolled sourdough tagliatelle with zucchini and cauliflower ($35), garfish 'millenese' with cabbage slaw ($39) and 220-gram Angus rump cap served with green peppercorn sauce, olive oil mash and mushroom ($40), plus side salads and garlic and rosemary potatoes ($11). Dessert-wise, order the caramel flan, chai ice cream, halva and pistachio crumble or cherry clafoute with chocolate sorbet and stout crumble, both $15. Of course, the wine list is equally as grand. If you're planning on visiting on a Friday or Saturday evening, you'll be getting the six-course Chef's Tasting Menu for $95 per person. Any other time, you'll have to opt for the $80 share-style menu if you're a group of eight or more.
