If you find yourself in Phillip Island and are looking for a feed, head to The Cape Kitchen. Due to its sincere dedication to locally grown ingredients, it's a popular choice — so be sure to book ahead. Set right on the Newhaven coast, the restaurant offers wonderful views stretching along the rocky coastline and across the Southern Ocean (where you might even spot a whale or two).

For breakfast, it serves up the likes of homemade muesli with poached pear and coconut yoghurt ($18.50), ricotta hotcakes with blueberry compote ($19.50), roasted field mushrooms with beetroot relish ($21.50), confit duck hash ($23) and fish benedict with beetroot hummus, apple cider hollandaise and, of course, poached eggs ($23). At lunchtime, expect Mornington black mussels with red curry sauce ($27), chicken liver pâté ($21) and salt and pepper squid ($26) to start, followed by parmesan and thyme gnocchi ($30), pan-seared salmon with creamed artichoke ($36) and braised lamb shoulder for two ($59).
