Snow-capped Southern Alps unfurled all around me. Lake Wãkatipu glimmered in the distance. I was ploughing down the broad, gentle slopes of Mount Cardrona, giddy with a mix of exhilaration and the cheeky après-ski refresher I’d had at the chondola summit, when it hit me: I was making it down a proper kilometre-long run.

Admittedly, six-year-olds were whipping past me with far more grace, and the number of times I ate snow will be staying between me and the mountain. But just a day ago, I was struggling to stand up in the flat learners’ area, which shares a fence with the Ski Kindy – a testament to either my natural talent or Cardrona Alpine Resort’s beginner-friendly facilities.

Located between Queenstown and Wānaka, Cardrona Alpine Resort accommodates anyone after a winter adventure. Drive past a historic mountain village tucked into Mount Cardrona’s valley, and you’ll find forgiving runs and family-friendly facilities sit alongside world-class freestyle parks and pipes built for serious steezing. It’s easy to see why it was recently voted the Best Ski Resort in New Zealand by the World Ski Awards

Accolades aside, Cardrona Alpine Resort is having a massive year: it’s got 160 hectares of fresh terrain in a brand-new Soho Basin, and the 2026 snow season has officially been extended till Sunday, October 18.

Cardrona Alpine Resort puts out daily snow reports from 6.30am onwards. Bad weather conditions might cause closures, so it’s always worth checking the website before driving up the mountain.

If you’re a first-time traveller to the South Island, you probably want to see more than the slopes. Just an hour’s drive from Cardrona, Queenstown (also known as New Zealand’s adventure capital) is the ideal base. Set against panoramic mountain views, the resort town combines an energetic downtown scene centred around a kitschy chalet-style strip and easy access to day trips and dining destinations further afield.

Our pick is voco Queenstown, a swanky 227-room addition that opened in July 2026. Cold, aching muscles will thank the sauna, fireplace-flanked lounge and all-day Mediterranean kitchen in the alpine-inspired stay, while the drying room and lockers are great for stowing snow gear.

Bookable ski buses run straight from various pick-up spots in Queenstown and Wānaka – a more low-key alternative – to Cardrona Alpine Resort. For drivers who don’t want to white-knuckle it up icy roads, free mountain shuttles are available at Mount Cardrona’s access road carpark throughout the day.

First-timer packages at Cardrona bundle up everything a beginner might need on the slopes, including lessons, a lift pass, and rental equipment.

The latter – boots, ski pants, poles, the lot – can be picked up at a trio of rental outposts. If you’re driving up with roof or boot racks fitted for the gear, we recommend practising the load-up with the locking mechanism. A freezing mountaintop car park isn’t a fun place to figure it out for the first time.

Adrenaline junkies and athletes might flock to Cardrona’s six basins for its TK – two half-pipes, Big Air jump and 800-metre gravity-cross racing course – but a fifth of the resort’s trails are built with beginners in mind.

The entire amphitheatre at the resort’s base is dedicated to learners, filled with mounds of fluffy snow and barely-there slopes. It’s cordoned off from faster skiers and snowboarders so newbies can find their feet without pressure, but you can still get an aspirational view of experts flying above the 22-foot-tall walls of the Olympic Superpipe.

Skiing or snowboarding lessons are a smart investment if you want to make the most of your time here. Group and private classes both run for four-and-a-half hours, and three magic carpets – conveyor belts that whisk you around the slope – ensure that you aren’t trudging uphill.

After nailing the basics, it’s time to graduate to higher slopes. Start by taking a scenic ride on McDougall’s Chondola (a chairlift-and-gondola hybrid) up to Vista Bar, where you’ll find a mix of winding runs to practise your turns. Lil’ Bucks Park is a step-up with a series of mellow jibs and jumps for those inspired to start freestyling.

Multi-day or seasonal lift passes include access to Cardrona’s sister mountain, Treble Cone, which intermediate skiers and snowboarders love for its steep, untamed terrain.

After a long day carving down the mountain, it’s time for a beloved ski tradition: the aprés session. With nine restaurants, bars and cafes dotting the resort, you’re never too far from a cosy spot for clinking glasses.

Hit up Vista Bar on top of McDougall’s Chondola for pours of ganache hot chocs, craft beers and champagne with sweeping vista views. Those on Captain’s Basin can ski into a pizzeria along Shaun’s Way for its famous potato leek slices and a well-earned pint.

If you’ve already made it to the resort’s base, warm up with spiked hot chocolates at The Lounge. Or simply head to The Mezze for a sit-down dinner where local produce shines, including cocktails shaken with spirits from Cardrona’s own distillery.

If a resort closure is announced in the morning, don’t write the day off yet. Board a vintage steamship to the working farm on Walter’s Peak, where you can spend the afternoon at a rustic BBQ buffet in a homestead, ride horseback through the mountain foothills, or watch a live sheepdog demonstration. Look out for Dougal, the Scottish Highland cow.

Milford Sound might be a five-hour drive, but its dramatic waterfalls and glaciers become even more breathtaking in stormy weather. Business-class cruises are worth booking in advance for a five-course feast inspired by the surrounding Fjordland region.

The Michelin Guide officially entered New Zealand last year, so an easy food tour is also on the cards. Four Queenstown restaurants and a Wānaka diner earned their stars, while many more received special mentions too.
