Overview
Set on a speck of land amid Lough Oughter — a labyrinth of waterways and enclaves — Cloughoughter Castle was a fortress for the powerful O'Reilly clan for over 300 years.
It was built during the 13th century and used as a stronghold during numerous storied battles. The ruins are populated by a vast variety of birdlife, from the common mallard to tufted ducks. Rent a kayak and paddle your way to shore throughout the day, the best time is sunset.
