Imperial Palace
Once the largest fortress in the world and the main residence for the Emperor of Japan.
Overview
Surrounded by chaotic cityscape, Tokyo's Imperial Palace serves as the main residence of the Emperor of Japan and boasts an impressive green space perfect for an inner-city escape.
As historic as it is large, it was once home to the Edo-jō (a shogunate castle) before becoming the official imperial residence in 1868. Little of the original structure remains due to fires and air raids during WWII but you can still see whimsical moats and castle walls that protected the manor from intruders. Most inner grounds are off-limits to the public with the exception of free twice-daily guided tours that can be reserved here. You're welcome to roam the stunning East Garden unaccompanied.
