Mercado de Abastos

This market was initially built to lessen traffic at the other Oaxacan markets — but has become a worthy stop in its own right.

Overview

Mercado de Abastos is a stimulating experience, with a patchwork of seemingly endless vendors selling meat, fish, fruit and veggies — most of which you probably won't recognise.

With few tourists making the trip, it's also a stellar spot for shopping local clay goods and handicrafts at a great price.

Although navigating this sprawling market isn't too difficult on your own, heading along with a local food tour ensures you'll get introduced to the unmissable stalls.
