Monte Alban Archaeological Site
This towering temple with tombs, hieroglyphs and a ball game court is a testament to the majesty of Mesoamerican civilisation.
Overview
Set on the outskirts of present-day Oaxaca, the Monte Albán Archaeological Site is an ancient Zapotec metropolis that served as one of the first cities in Mesoamerica around 2500 years ago. The stunning remains include terraces, pyramids and canals spread across more than six square kilometres.
Anointed in 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the political and social structures of the Zapotec people.
