Church of Santa Maria Assunta
A Roman villa, a medieval crypt and a stunning historical church on the coast of Positano.
Overview
Having experienced various stages of restoration, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta presents an interesting mix of different religious and historical features. On the outside, the simple elegance of the tiled dome and almost stark, monumental frontage and 18th-century bell tower provide a charming contrast to the high, rugged hills behind the town.
The church was apparently dedicated to the Holy Virgin, Positano's patron saint, in 1159, following a miraculous event at sea. One of its most famous art pieces within the church is the restored Byzantine icon above the high altar. The various chapels, naves, carvings, sculpture and memorials date from various periods between the 16th and 18th centuries, particularly the elaborate decorations along the columns and ceilings. There's also a 20th-century memorial to Flavio Gioia from Positano, the inventor of the compass. Exquisitely restored, it's well worth a look for the beauty alone.
