A highlight of the Auckland summer is back for another year, this time featuring a trifecta of classic films to get you in the mood for the holiday season. Wynyard Quarter’s free open-air cinema, Silo Cinema, is an event for the whole family with films of all genres being projected onto the towering Silo 7.

After two pre-season events including cycle-powered cinema on November 14 and a screening of oscar-nominated New Zealand-Samoan film The Orator as part of Urbanesia Festival on November 28, the fifth year of Silo Cinema will kick into full swing with heart-felt comedy Cool Runnings on December 4. For those who have been living off the grid, the film is based on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsleigh team. Hilarity ensues.

Yuletide favourite Elf, starring Hollywood funny man Will Ferrel as an out of place elf, will screen on December 11, and classic horror-comedy Gremlins will round things off the weekend before Christmas on December 18. All films kick off at 9pm.

As well as the Friday night films, the Silo bar and markets will be open for business from 5pm, offering everything from street food, art, crafts, fashion and last minute Christmas prezzies.
