Cider and sun go hand-in-hand. And there is no better time to enjoy some time with mates than at the dusky hour.

So where are these majestical points of sunshine in Auckland? With camera and some ice-cold Somersby Ciders in hand, we were tasked with capturing some of Auckland's top spots for watching the soothing hot ball of goodness depart on its way to lighten up someone else's day.

When fast-paced city living gets the better of you and it's time to have a quiet evening bevy, head to one of these epic spots for a refreshing sundowner.

Please be respectful of liquor bans and as always, be a tidy kiwi and respect the environment by leaving nothing but footprints.

North Head

Devonport

Rich in history and with views of both Waitemata Harbour and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, North Head is one of our favourite sunset spots in Auckland. Just a 15 minute ferry from the City Centre to Devonport and a 15 minute walk through Devonport township will take you to the historic reserve. Traipse through the WWII bunkers and tunnels before watching the sun go to bed.

Auckland Domain

Grafton

One of Auckland's most popular reserves, Auckland Domain is a great place to spend the evening people watching over a drink or two. Be sure to shoot off before the sun sets entirely, however, as there is a liquor ban in place from 10pm to 7am during daylight saving and 7pm to 7am out of daylight saving.

Mt Victoria

Devonport

Another Devonport treasure, providing one of the best panoramic views of Auckland City, Mt Victoria is just a 15 minute ferry ride away from the CBD. Perch on a painted mushroom and be sure to bring a rug; in the event of an onshore wind Mt Vic can get nippy.

Hamilton Road Beach

Herne Bay

Hamilton Road Beach, slightly quieter than the neighbouring Sentinel Beach, is the definition of a charming inner-city bay. Though technically north-facing, it is a stunner of a spot to have a post-work swim while enjoying the westerly glow shine across the harbour.

Little Shoal

Little Shoal Bay

Northcote Point

The beach, boats, the bridge. Little Shoal bay is so quintessentially Auckland it hurts. The spot, frequented by locals and their dogs, looks at the city through the concrete pylons harbour bridge. The views, which span all the way to West Auckland, make the spot perfect for a Somersby at sunset. Just be sure to keep any drinks out of the carpark, as there is a liquor ban in that portion of the reserve.

Rocky Bay

Waiheke Island

The locals of Rocky Bay subscribe to a true island lifestyle. Here, city-slickers with baches are few and far between. Instead, locals with vege gardens reign supreme. This unpretentious beach is perfect for a relaxed sundowner. Instead of catching the Ferry back to the CBD, why not grab a bed for the night? There are accommodation options aplenty.

Mt St John

Epsom

Mt St John brings rural serenity to suburbia. Being one of the smaller volcanoes in the Auckland region and not having vehicle access to the summit render it quieter than its bigger siblings. Despite its slightly smaller size, Mt St John boasts views of the entire Auckland region. Snuggle up on one of the benches and enjoy.

Bastion Point 2

Bastion Point

Orakei

This Orakei hotspot might just be the most beautiful place to watch the sky turn orange behind the city. With views this stunning across harbour you won't want to leave. However, the same liquor bans as those at Auckland Domain are applicable, so if having a sundown drink, be sure to have ditched it (responsibly) by nightfall.

Point Chevalier Beach

Point Chevalier

West-facing and easily accessible from the CBD, Pt. Chevalier beach is a prime spot for a sundowner. Take along a picnic blanket and grab some fish and chips.

Mr Toms

Ponsonby

Ponsonby hotspot Mr Tom's is frequented by well-dressed urbanites in the know. Thankfully, Mr Tom's is surprisingly unpretentious and the food is well above par. Grab a seat outside and wash down their delicious duck fat potatoes and pork belly with a Somersby Cider fresh from the tap.
