A global ice cream company famous for its chunk-filled offerings and bizarre flavour titles like Schweddy Balls and Dave Matthews Band is setting up shop in Auckland.

Ben & Jerry’s flagship New Zealand store will open at 160 Ponsonby Rd from the middle of December. The scoop shop will mark the 30th territory for the company, which was launched out of a renovated petrol station in Vermont, USA in the '70s. The empire's trademark chunk textures mixed within the ice cream came from founder Ben Cohen’s severe case of anosmia, a disorder that results in the lack of smell or taste. Fortunately co-founder Jerry Greenfield was on hand to look after the all important factor of taste.

While flavours Schweddy Balls and Dave Matthews Band sure do sound promising, 18 more conventional varieties can be expected at the Auckland branch, including Strawberry Cheesecake, Choc Chip Cookie Dough, English Toffee Crunch, Triple Caramel Chunk and Vanilla.

As well as the physical store, Ben and Jerry’s will eventually be available through specific retailers across New Zealand.
