Initially unmasked with the lifespan of 12 months, Grey Lynn pop-up bistro Jafa by Night is set to close its doors half a year earlier than expected. Not because trade is slow but because the concept has proven so successful that it will become its own standalone establishment in the not-too-distant future.

Sharing a lease with longstanding cafe Jafa, the after-hours pop-up was founded by first-time restauranteur Aftab Moosa, a licensed dentist intent on trying his hand at the food game. As the cafe closes its doors at 4pm, Jafa by Night unfolds across the two-level dining room, with head chef Ross Birch (of Citizen Park, Snapdragon, and Scarlett Slimms & Lucky) in the engine room and sommelier Gary Petzet (poached from Gusto at The Grand) running front of house. Together, the duo creates a seamless dining experience.

As Birch's bistro menu wraps up on May 7, the restaurant intends to go out with a bang, hosting a two-week degustation service. From May 11 - 21, diners will be able to indulge in either 3, 5 or 7 courses with the further option of wine matching. The degustations will cost $69, $89 and $119 per person.

Jafa By Night is open from 6 - 10pm, Wednesday to Saturday until May 21. Bookings can be made via (09) 820 4143.
