Overview

If you have any qualms about where you have landed on Hinemoa Street, one look at the wooden crates moonlighting as seats and nifty garland of potato sack letters spelling 'ORGANIC' will confirm that, yes, you have arrived at an organic café – and a very popular one at that. With barely a table spare on a Saturday morning, imagine our surprise to find no bedraggled hipsters in sight. No sirree - this is an organic café for the masses.

Our first step through the door saw us making big plans for the mouth-watering sweets in the cabinet, however we vastly underestimated the size of our mains, and thus sadly left devoid of the sugary goods. Let it be duly noted that on my next visit, I will most definitely be scoffing their gluten-free caramel slice and / or their rhubarb and custard brioche before my main hits the table.

Speaking of mains, their menu is a comforting array of café classics made with organic and ethically supplied goods. I tried the Raw Beetroot Salad ($20.40) that arrived overflowing with pumpkin seeds, carrot, grilled haloumi, avocado and a refreshingly zingy pomegranate dressing. My friend ordered the Sweet Corn Fritters ($20.8) – stacked like some sort of exotic hamburger with Portobello mushrooms, organic bacon and feta sandwiched between two generous fritters and topped with relish and sour cream.

Hinemoa Street Organic Café feels like a treasure trove of quality, nutritious café fare with an impressive following of Birkenhead locals and beyond who are sure to keep this humble little gem budding for a long time to come.
