Creative Mornings Auckland With Askew One
Askew is a self-professed restless personality with a touch of ADD. Mix this with a childhood set amidst 80s sugary diets and TV parenting and you've got a good idea what to expect.
Overview
Who would have thought an event held on Friday mornings at sparrow's fart would have gone down such a treat? Those of you who made it along to the debut Creative Mornings Auckland last month will know that these monthly fixtures are looking set to be a huge success. The first speakers from Studio Magazine set the bar high with a great insight into the creation of their mag through to their launch and a bit of quick-tongued wit to warm everyone up first thing.
The second Creative Mornings welcomes guest speaker Askew One. He is a multi-disciplinary, largely self-taught artist, better known for his graffiti art. Widely regarded as one of the New Zealand graffiti scene’s driving forces, he has managed to remain at the forefront of the movement whilst working tirelessly behind the scenes in a diverse array of projects.
Askew is a self-professed restless personality with a touch of ADD. Mix this with a childhood set amidst 80s sugary diets and TV parenting and you've got a good idea what to expect. His work draws on New Zealand’s geographical isolation and its subsequent desire to feel inclusion through pop-cultural appropriation.
Although working primarily in aerosol paint, Askew is versed in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, music and moving image. He has travelled abroad partaking in many art events including Art Basel in Miami 2009 and 2010, he has collated and co-authored a book about New Zealand graffiti entitled In Form and has progressed exponentially in music video directing from his first days of making short graffiti videos for himself and his friends in 2009.
This year has seen Askew push further forward with the launch of his own online store, the release of his first music video to be serviced to US television and stepping into the fine arts arena with his admission to the The Fountainhead Residency programme in Miami, Florida. Askew continues to progress above and beyond with all his disciplines at hand, making him a unique, self-sufficient and influential artist.
If last time is anything to go by, Creative Mornings is definitely worth the early wake-up; it will guarantee you a good story to tell at morning tea that day.
