A New Gallery Showcasing Contemporary Light Artists Has Opened in Auckland's CBD

There's no reason for your next art gallery visit to be restricted to daylight hours. Auckland is now home to New Zealand's first dedicated Lightworx Gallery, showcasing contemporary innovations by award-winning light artists.

The new space on Customs Street West from Queenstown's Artbay Gallery Group is fresh and contemporary, with clean lines, concrete floors and expansive white walls making way for kaleidoscopic and avant-garde light and neon works. It's open seven days from 11.30am to 9.30pm, providing the perfect opportunity for some after-hours viewing.

Lightworx Gallery director Pauline Bianchi has curated a selection of cutting-edge works from award-winning New Zealand and international light artists. Artist Trish Campbell's captivating light columns can be found alongside vibrant multi-coloured X-shaped mirrors from Wendy Hannah. Māori artist Robert Jahnke's compelling neons are there, too, with many of the reflective works based on tukutuku weaving patterns found in tribal houses.

New Zealand-based designer and artist Tim Christie features a series of geometric artworks and light boxes, while British born artist and sculptor Max Patté serves up his signature hypnotic light works.
