Everybody is far too used to hearing words like 'recession', 'interest rates' and 'I'm broke' of late, but in Minneapolis the opposite is being celebrated. In true Marie Antoinette style, wealth is being displayed artistically in representations of the jet-set elite at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Embarrassment of Riches: Picturing Global Wealth, where the exploits of the 'haves' and the upper class are being splashed around like expensive champagne in The Great Gatsby.
Nine photographers and video artists are taking part in the exhibition which portray domesticity, rich retired ladies who do nothing but travel and luxuriate, Hollywood starlets and car promo models in all of their glory. The Institute puts a serious interpretation on it, claiming that the exhibition shows how photographers are viewing and experiencing the new economy throughout shifts in economic power, wealth flooding in certain areas of the world and political partnerships between countries. The result is a pictorial exploration which opens discussions of what wealth looks like in different cultural settings and in today's economic world.
