Overview

A fresh experience is something to be treasured in any city and we think the ability to have a mobile pop-up teppenyaki restaurant in almost any location you wish is at the top of the list – hence our excitement after discovering Shin’s Teppenyaki.

Born from the devastation of Christchurch, chef Shin Yamashita started the business after the September earthquake brought down the well-known Kaiapoi Teppanyaki Restaurant he worked in. But, he thought, why not have a mobile restaurant serving amazing Japanese at your place, or any place really (logistics permitting)? And thus, an amazing idea was born.

With the right amount of space, the team can construct an amazing pop-up eatery to cater for family and friends. You bring the drinks, they bring everything else, and the result is fantastic. So fantastic in fact we had to give it a try, hence the Concrete Playground Pop-up Teppenyaki night took place – an evening of fried egg throwing, sake sipping and sizzling snack consumption.

Truly not to be underestimated for ease of event management: the team bring gazebos, tables, chairs, food, lights and basically everything you need. The food is outstanding with a range of delectable menu options – being gluttons at this information portal we went all out, gorging on edamame beans, scallops, prawns, salmon, chicken, ginger pork belly, lamb racks eye fillet, stir-fried rice and stir-fried veggies; followed promptly by a coma.

Should you require a little less food or custom options, all is possible. The team are amazing and require little to no effort on your part – we of course decided to challenge them a little, selecting a public park for a unique experience.
